Law mandating that all labs must be regulated using the same standards regardless of the location, type, or size
DAP
Accreditation body in BC that has the responsibility of determining if a laboratory is qualified to practice analysis of patient specimens
JCAHO
Now called the JC. An agency that accredits hospitals and large healthcare facilities. A key player in bringing quality improvement techniques to healthcare
NCCLS/CLSI
National non-profit organization that develops guidelines and standards for all Laboratory areas
QA
Complete program for quality care that tracks outcomes through scheduled audits of appropriateness, applicability, and timeliness of patient care.
QA Indicator
A statement that identifies a measurable monitor for an important aspect of patient care
QC
Procedural control that is a component of a quality assurance program
QI
Ongoing institution wide evaluation of facility activities and customer satisfaction
PIPEDA
The federal Canadian law that regulates confidentiality of patient’s information
Accreditation
external evaluation process of healthcare services
Licensure
passing a certification exam set by a government legislated regulatory college
Assault
Intentional threat or movements that could make a person feel in danger of harmful physical contact
Battery
Intentional, non-consensual physical contact by one person with another person

A method of assuring quality in testing, by comparing current results of a lab test with previous results for the same test on the same patient

A process in which one party in a litigation process questions another under oath whiles a court reporter records every word
Discovery
A process which includes taking depositions and interrogating parties involved
Expressed Consent
Verbal or written permission for proposed treatment with surgery, Experimental drugs, or high risk procedures
Implied consent
Permission indicated by actions of the patient
Malpractice
Claim of improper treatment or negligence brought against a professional by means of a civil lawsuit
Informed consent
Agreement by patient to medical treatment after receiving adequate information about the procedure, risks, and consequences
