Q

Should the NHS be able to prescribe gym membership?

A

INTRO
- NHS core value - treatment should be free at the pount of access
- when looking at the term prescription we think of medication, but it’s access here
- link to obesity crisis (1/5th children are obsesse) and comorbidities asscocciated with it

‘I am now going to consider the pros and cons’
FOR
- more access
- prevention over treatment -> NHS long term plan
- link to mental health ‘after covid an additional 10 million ppl required mental health support’
- reduces burden in long term

AGAINST
- there is a risk of patient not utilising membership
- waste of resource and funds
- link to the fact that NHS is already struggling with funds so this may not be best idea in terms of allocation of funds
- give alternative solution (couch to 5k app)
- there is a problem of potential exploration, patients could falsify their symptoms for a free membership causing a grey area for GPs .

CONCLUSION
- no however alternative should be considered;
- tackle diet
- couch to 5K app
- Campaigns to increase physical health in another way
