What is the relevance of the ethics code?
the line you have to worry about crossing, cover your ass, don’t overstep your boundaries
professional judgement
you need to know when to report something
its not always clear
Activities the ethics code apply to
clinical work, counseling, school practice, research, teaching, supervision, construction, organizational consulting, forensic activities and administration
Persons that ethics apply to
clients, participants, students, children, adults, those with and without mental disorders, diverse individuals, other professionals
Military base ethics
many come back saying they have killed many people, veterans are usually only counseled by veterens, soldiers are taught they are not able to intervene
University ethics
research, counseling facilities, frats and sororities
Court ethics
drug court
Private or public social services ethics
child and family services, probation, parole
there are cubicles which don’t even separate the clients and clinicians
How is communication done?
consultation, in person, phone, fax, internet, TV, radio
Reasonable
prevailing professional judgement of psychologists engaged in similar activities in similar circumstances, given the knowledge the psychologist had or should have had at that time
Reprimand
given when a violation was not of a kind likely to cause harm to another person, or cause substantial harm to the profession and was not otherwise of sufficient gravity as to warn a more severe, verbal warning
Censure
if the violation was of a kind likely to cause harm to another person but the violation was not of a kind likely to cause substantial harm to another person
Expulsion
a person can be expelled from the APA when the violation was of a kind likely to cause harm to another person
Stipulated Resignation
acceptable avadavat for another person
Cease and desist an activity
reporting ethics violations; remove false information from documents
Obtain supervision
always have someone supervising you, even if you are a clinical supervisor, even if you have a little bit of doubt. always document everything
Additional training or education
never stop learning
Evaluation or obtain treatment
if you are too involved or need your own treatment, get it
Principle A: Beneficence and Nonmalefinence
promising not to do harm; psychologists dual obligation to strive to do good and avoid doing harm; promote the welfare of others
Principle B: Fidelity and Responsibility
fidelity: faithfulness of one human being to another; promise keeping and appropriate relationships
Principle C: Integrity
only go as far as you allow it; you are separate from your personal you-but keep them the same. its okay to joke around sometimes; honest communication; truth telling; accuracy. refrain from making professional commitments you cannot keep. if you don’t know the answer do not give one
Principle D: Justice
provide fair access to treatment and scientific knowledge to all people. know it, own it, teach it. when a client is doing what they need to know, make sure people know. mirror what you are given and tell the truth, especially if they are not doing what they need to do
Principle E: Respect for peoples Rights and Dignity
respect the rights of all people; confidentiality; rights to therapy; respect autonomous decision making; have to know when to go to your supervisor
