what is the just war theory?
is the use of violence between two or more nations to resolve a dispute
outline Christian attitudes towards the just war theory
- war and fighting are wrong except when they base their views on jesus
- some believe jesus was a pacifist “ blessed are the peace makers”
“take life for life, eye for eye,tooth for tooth”

what justifies the just war theory?
- just war must be authorised by legal authority
- the cause of the war must be just
- war must be fought to establish good and get rid of evil
- there must be a reasonable chance of success
Outline the three areas that the just war theory covers
Jus ad bellum- the criteria for going to war or starting a job must be just
jus in bello-the conduct required during war in order for the war to be considered just
jus post bellum - the conditions for ensuring justice after the war is over
Problems that arise when using the just war theory
jus in bello- the use of weapons must be in proportion to the threat opposed
weaknesses of the just war theory
Just war encourages war- it has political and psychological effect suggesting that war can be acceptable
-people are unleashed to kill or wound each other
WAR IS TOO COMPLEX TO BE GOVERNED BY SIMPLISTIC PRINCIPALS
strengths of the just war theory
- The war must be considered the last resort after all diplomatic negotiations
- it is flexible and changes with time
- it allows defence for the defenceless

what is a pacifist?
someone that holds that killing someone is a bad thing
Absolute pacifist
it is never right to take part in a war because one should never kill a human being
-violence is never right
relative pacifism
war is wrong but there are some circumstances when it could be the lesser of two evils
Religious pacifism

- opposes all forms of violence
