What is meant by the term ethics?
Ethics refers to what is right and wrong.
What are the issues related to privacy, in regards to technology?
- Once something is shared online, it is impossible to delete completely
- Through social media people unwittingly share details of purchases, their schools, local area etc.
What are the issues, related to Inclusion, in regards to technology?
- Among groups, there can be social stigma about not having the latest technology
- Not everyone in the country has access to the internet, so may miss out on information such as job listings
What are the issues, related to professionalism, in regards to technology?
- increasing expectation of people to be available outside of working hours; impact of technology
- competition for jobs is greater, as wider reaching job opportunity postings
- social media can be seen by anyone, even prospective emplyers, blurring the line between private and professional life
What are the issues, related to artificial intelligence, in regards to technology?
- driverless cars are a real possibility, so who would be held responsible if a crash happened?
- there are concerns around using artificial intelligence, and it taking over traditionally human jobs.
What are some of the health issues and advantages technology has brought?
(+) using health tracking apps allows people to monitor exercise and calorie intake (people are better informed

What is the Copyrights, desings and patents act (1988)?
- protects intellectual property
- copyright applies to anything that can be written, or images, existing immeditely, no need to apply for it
- creative commons license; copyright holder may issues a creative commons license to allow others to use, and can put limitations
- registered design applies to logos, icons, similar, but need to registered
- patents are for inventions, doesnt apply to program code
What is the computer misuse act (1990)?
- hacking is a criminal offence, the law recognises
- accessing material on a computer u aren’t authorised to access (now illegal)
- modifying material on a computer that you are not authorised to modify
What is the data protection act (1998)?
- law applies to personal data of living individuals. if an organisastion stores a living person’s personal data it must be
- processed fairly and lawfully
- help for specific purposes
- relevent and not excessive
- upto date, and not kept for longer than needed
- processes according to rights, kept securely
- not transferred outside EU, unless to a country with a similar law
What is the freedom of information act (2000)?
- law gives members of the public right to access information under following circumstances:
- information related to either a public body (police, gvt etc), or an organisation that provides a service to a public body
- providing data that doesn’t breach another law
What are the issues related to cybersecurity?
- a government cybersecurity police may weaken your own privacy, as it could grant access to personal data to gvt
- company may be held liable if it doesn’t prvent data from unauthorised access, sued for data breack
- issues overlaps with many others, e.g. wireless networking, cloud storage
What are the issues related to mobile technologies/ wearable technologies?
- amount your phone knows about you, e.g. friends locations, is already a breach of privacy
- constant replacement of mobile phones has negative env impacts
- illegal copies of MP3s common of people’s phones
What are the issues related to wireless networking?
- easier access for unauthorised users than in a wired network
- wireless network is better for environment
- privacy can be breached
What are the issues related to cloud storage?
- other people may gain access to data when stored remotely
- providers must adhere to Data protection act
- fewer more centralised data stores better for env
What are the issues related to theft of computer code/ copyright of algorithms?
- breaches computer misuse act, compyright, designs and patents act
- stealing code is illegal and unfair
- unfair advantage
What are the issues related to cracking?
- cracking involves gaining access to part of a program that you do not have access to, to bypass payment e.g.
- breach of computer misuse act
- ethically unsound
What are the issues related to hacking?
- potentially breached peoples privacy
- computer misuse act, data protection act
- can result in additional crimes
What are the issues related to computer based implants?
- implants carry complication of replacement
- major breach of privacy, as hacking could lead to breach of pirvacy including biometric data.
