Lots of ethnic groups + young population.

- Makes war more likely.
- Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan.
Debt?
$43 bn national.
What is the aid like in Ethiopia?
Humanitarian spending drops from $600-100 million. More spent on healthcare.
Describe Lake Ziway:
- Largest producer of flowers in world, use water for flower farms.
- up to 160k people.
- Hospitals and footy stadiums built.
Describe the bottom up work in Ethiopia:
Farm Africa:
- Coffe farmers. (28% exports).
- Employ 15 million people.
- In Tigray, promoting of sustainable farming methods.
- 89% of pop earn less than £2 a day.
Describe Top down (omo river dam).
- Double power output of country.
- Flood in 2006 killed thousands of livestock.
- Exports would exceed coffe.
- 20,000 ppl depend on river for food.
- Tourism and fishing cause shrinking of lake & salinity of water.
What is the trade and economy like?
- Imports $11 billion. (Machinery, Vehicles, Fuel).
- Exports $3 billion. (Coffee, Gold, seeds).
Describe the MDG’s in ethiopia:
- Maternal mortality down 26%.
- Only 22% of women in parliament, but 93% of girls in primary school.
- Over 1 mill live with HIV. - 100% can get a free malaria test.
What other MDG’s are on track?
- Eradicate extreme poverty.
- Ensure environmental sustainability.
Political problems?
- Unstable corrupt government.
- Wars in Tigray.
Environmental problem?
- Unreliable rainfall. Eastern has droughts.
- Lowlands have malaria and mosquitoes.
Social problems?
- Saudis buy all the good land, leaving Ethiopians starving.
How tall is the dam and how much water does it hold back?
- Around 250m.
- Around 15 billion m3 of water.
