What does Sewel say about fathers, gangs and cultures>

A
  • argues black boys underachieve because of lack of fathers tough love. They end up turning to street gangs where they recieve uncommon love and loyalty. So now these black boys turn to anti school black masculinity role models.
  • Arnot calls this “ultra tough ghetto superstars” which is influenced by rap lyrics
  • sewell believes that black boy underachievement comes from cultural differences in socilaistion. They are peer pressured into and by gangs
  • gillbourne, (a sociologist) argues that peer pressure = not the issue and that its education institution racism reproducing black boy failure.

Q

Asian families

A
  • Sewel: says indian and
    chinese pupils benefit from
supportive families who value education (asian work ethic)

Attitudes and values

A
  • CD theorists argue that they arent socialised into the mainstream culture and this leads to a lack of ambition and -competitiveness for sacrifices for future.
They are socialised into the “live for today” motive that doesnt value education. This is y they underachieve.

Q

White w/c families

A
  • Mculloch (a sociologist) white w/c pupils also underachieve, the survey of 16k pupils found ethnic minorities aspire to uni more then w/c white pupils.
  • Lupton studied 4 w/c school and found teachers blacmed lack of parental support on w/c white underachievement as they had no poverty schemes like free school meals.
  • Evan argues white w/c street culture that teaches pupil to withstand intimidation and intimidate others. This is then brought into schools making it a power game causing distruptions.

Q

Critisms of CDT

  • what did Driver say?
  • what did Lawerence say?
  • what did Keddie say?
A
  • Driver said that they ignore the positive effects such as how black carribeans give females a strong independent role model
  • Lawerence said black pupils dont fail due to weakness but to general racism in education.

-keddie argues the CDT is a victim blaming explanations. Ethnic minority students are not culturally deprived and only different.
Schools are simply biased and favour the white culture.

These critics believe instead of compensantory educstion , schools should try to go for multicultural education where schools recognise and value minority cultures and include them in the curriculum. Or schools could go on an anti racist education, a policy that challenges these discrimintion thats in schools.
