1
Q
External Factors: Material Deprivation
A
- Some ethnic groups (e.g. Black Caribbean) are disproportionately eligible for FSM, face high levels of poverty and deprivation
- Educational underachievement may be due to material deprivation
- Families often work in low income jobs with no job security - cannot afford computers, healthy food/nutrition etc.
- Chinese and Indian students are more likely to be non-FSM, from MC families with economic capital - can afford products necessary for their educational achievement
AO3 - Compensatory Education - introduced by the government (extra services, breakfast club, to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds)
There are some students (Chinese) on FSM who still outperform non-FSM students, may stem from cultural deprivation rather than material

Q
External Factors: Cultural Deprivation
A
- Gypsy, Roma and Irish Traveller communities place less importance on education
- Their main priority is to find a manual job and earn a living which doesn’t require qualifications (boys) or to become housewives and mother (girls)
