Acultural nursing care
Care that avoids concern for cultural differences
Culturally sensitive nursing care
Care that respects and is compatible with each clients culture
Culture
Values , beliefs and practices of a particular group
Race
Biological variations. Categorize people with genetically shared physical characteristics
Anglo-Americans
White people in the United States who trace their ancestry in the United Kingdom and Western Europe
Minority
Is used when referring to collective people who differ from the dominant group in terms of cultural characteristics such as language , skin color etc
Ethnicity
A bond or kinship a person feels with his or her country of birth or place of ancestral orgin(Jamaicans)
Cultural shock
Bewilderment over behavior that is culturally unfamiliar
Stereotypes
Fixed attitude about all people who share a common characteristics.(prevent seeing and treating another person as unique)
Generalization
Supposition that a person shared cultural characteristics with others of similar background.
Ethnocentrism
Beliefs that one’s own ethnicity is superior to all others.(racism!)
African Americans
Ancestral origins is Africa. Mistrustful of the medical establishment.
-Tuskegee study
Nurse should be professional, follow up with patient requests, ask open ended questions
Latinos (Hispanics)
Latino American, trace their origins to Mexico, Puerto Rico etc. are comfortable sitting close to interviewers. Nurse must ask questions carefully. Latino men are overprotective
Transcultural nursing
Providing nursing care within the context of another’s culture
Ex:assessments of a cultural nature
-acceptance of each client as an individual
-knowledge of health problems that affect culture
-planning of care within the clients health belief system
Cultural assessment
To provide culturally sensitive care, the nurse strives to gather data about the unique characteristics
Cultural assessment data include:
-language and communication style
-hygiene practices
-special clothing
-religion and religious practices
-rituals surrounding birth
- family and gender roles
-proper forms of greeting and showing respect
-food habits and dietary restriction
-health beliefs and medical practices
Limited English proficiency(LEP)
An inability to speak,read,write or understand English at a level that permits interacting effectively.
Certified interpreter
Translator who is certified by a professional organization through rigorous testing based on appropriate and consistent criteria
Telephonic interpreting
Over the phone translation
Bilingual
Able to speak a second language fluently
Native Americans
Fearful of health care, tend to be private .impatience may be considered disrespectful, nurse has to be patient .
Nurse should write notes after not during when they talk
Asian americans
Brief or factual answers and little elaboration. May not openly disagree with authority figures, because of respect of harmony.
Eye contact in cultures
Anglo Americans make eye contact. Asian American and natives find it offensive or Arabs .
Space and distance in culture
Always best to provide explanation when close in contact
