Social trends (2007) showed in 2001 nearly 48% of Afro-Caribbean families with dependent children were lone parent families

Highest numbers of lone mothers and divorce rates

Berthoud-suggests attitudes of young female Afro-Caribbean women are characterised by “modern individualism” (self-reliant, have a job), two reasons:

  1. More likely to be employed than Afro-Caribbean men
  2. Likely to be supportive kinship network including friends who may be referred to as aunts and uncles
