Gilborn and Youdell
Teachers=treat pupils differently based-race.
Found: students believed- can’t speak English properly (asian)- spoke- childish manner-left out of discussions too- led to feeling isolated. Teachers= quicker- discipline black pupils over others for same behaviour- due to racialised expectations- expected black= more discipline problems- when students confronted teachers about behaviour- led to conflict between two. - stats= black boys 3x ml- excluded than white boys
Mac an Ghaill
Study- black+asian A-level students- sixth form college-
Foster
Black=ml- streamed low- neg perceptions/ labels- behaviour /ability
Definition of ethnocentric curriculum?
Curriculum that favours British knowledge and traditions over alternative cultures
Sociologists for ethnocentric curriculum
Troyna and Williams, David, Ball, Coard
Troyna and Williams
British skls curriculum = ethnocentric- gives priority- white culture+ the eng lang
David
National curriculum= specifically British: ignores non-European langs/literature/music
Ball
Claims NC=ignores cultural/ethnic diversity +ignores Asian / black history
Coard
Ethnocentric curriculum may produce under-achievement
Examples of EC? (AO2)
- School calendar - holidays off- Easter/Christmas- not other cultures e.g. Diwali/Eid
- History- focused on British- presents in + way- other countries neg - focused on past glory of Eng- ignores black/Asian history- causes low self-esteem- lead to failure
- Westernised uniform- penalised if wore something from own culture
Effect of EC on students?
Taking time off- low attendance
Could offend- low attention
Demotivates/ affects ability
Analysis for EC? (AO3)
Lessons- slavery -white ppl= seen-saviours - EMs = victims
Vietnam war- British/ American seemed to be more powerful- Vietnam won.
Eval for EC (AO3)
EC- doesn’t effect all EM- Chinese/ Indian pupils= 83% getting A*-C
Definition of Institutional racism
(don’t use if done para with g&y- labelling as too similar)
Discrimination built into way institutions (skls/colleges) operate- could lead to pupils= treated unfairly due to race
Sociologists for institutional racism
Wright, Mirza, Sewell
Wright
Found teachers had ethnocentric views- often assumed Asian pupils couldn’t speak Eng very well- left out of discussions- felt isolated
Mainly Asian girls= marginalised- teachers neg assumptions of them being passive- assuming they cant speak eng rather than choosing to not speak
Mirza
Studied ambitious black girls who faced teacher racism. Found: racist teachers= discouraging black pupils from being ambitious from kinds of advice given about career/option choices
3 types of teacher racism, according to Mirza
- Colour-blind: Believe all pupils= equal but in practice- allow racism to go unchallenged
- Liberal chauvinists: Believe all black pupils= culturally deprived- inadequate N&V- low expectations of them
- Overt racists: Believe blacks= inferior- actively discriminate against them
Black girls- tried to avoid effects of teachers neg attitudes e.g. stopped participating- didn’t ask for help- put them at disadv as restricted their opportunities
