Ethos Flashcards
(11 cards)
Informed Consent
Permission given to do the experiment. The information given could cause them to figure out the aim of the study. You could hide information then debrief at the end.
Deception
Not telling the participant the truth. This causes a problem as there’s not fully informed consent. This can be worked around through debriefing. Also they can ask an ethical committee and also ask a group if they’re OK with being deceived.
Right to withdraw
At any point the participant can quit the study. If certain people leave the sample may be bias. You may work around this by telling them money and rewards are still paid if they withdraw.
Protection from harm
Psychological effects eg low self esteem humiliation etc. Also physical effects. Any risks shouldn’t be greater than those in everyday life and should be stopped when distress is encountered.
Confidentiality
Participants have their information protected. However the participants information could be relevant to the study so they are given numbers instead of names.
Privacy
Participants have the right to control the flow of information. The information could be relevant to the study. To combat this the participants have the right to have their information pulled from the study.
Researchers need to make sure that participants attitudes and opinions are not demeaned or that their associations are not damaged by their participation
When working with vulnerable people there is inability to give informed consent. There is more susceptibility to psychological harm and they must consider the short and long term effects of their research
Before a lab gets their license from the BPS to work with animals and carry out research they must be under certain conditions.
Results are important enough to justify use of animals. The results couldn’t be achieved without animals. A minimum number of animals are used and discomfort is at a minimum.
The 3 R’s were endorsed by the House of Lords in 2002. The law however states animal research must continue to test new drugs.
Reduction (of number of animals used)
Replacement (use alternative methods where possible)
Refinement (use improved techniques to reduce stress)
Psychological research has to comply with the guidelines drawn up by the BPS.
These are respect competence integrity and responsibility.
