Eukaryotic Cell Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is another name for plasma membrane?
Plasmalemma
What is the purpose of the plasma membrane?
Separate the cell from extracellular space + fluid
What is the plasma membrane made up of?
- phospholipid
- protein
- carbohydrate
- cholesterol
What is the main function of the plasma membrane?
Selective barrier that regulates the passage of certain materials in & out cell
What does the plasma membrane facilitate ?
Transport of specific mols
What are 3 types of membranes ?
- Impermeable - subst CANNOT cross membrane
- Freely permeable - substs CAN cross the membrane FREELY
- Selectively permeable membrane - allows CERTAIN subst to pass
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
Helps moves materials around the cell + dissolves waste
What does the mitochondria produce?
ATP produced
What is the inner membrane of the mitochondria called?
Cristae
What is the matrix of the membrane?
Enclosed part by innermost membrane
Why is the matrix important?
Respiration occurs ; high conc of Enzymes present
What is the function of the ER?
- Synthesizes proteins, carbohydrates, + lipids
- storage + transport of these structures
What are the 2 types of ER?
- Smooth ER ( carbohydrate + lipid metabolism)
2. Rough ER (synthesis of protein)
What is the Stack of flattened membrane discs of the Golgi apparatus called?
Cisternae
What is the main function of the Golgi apparatus?
Distribution + shipment of cell’s chemical products
- modifies proteins + fats made in ER + preps for export outside of cell
What does the ribosome contain and what is its main function?
RNA
FN: manufacture of proteins using info provide by DNA
What are the 2 types of ribosomes?
- Free - scattered in cytoplasm
2. Fixed- attached to ER
What do lysosomes contain?
hydrolytic digestive enzymes (acid phosphatase)
Where are lysosomes most numerous in?
White blood cells + macrophages
What are lysosomes responsible for?
- Intracellular digestion
- breakdown of cell waste into simple compounds
What is the function of microtubules?
Stability to cell
What is stored @ the nucleus?
DNA
What is the function of the nucleus?
- coordinates cell activities (growth, cell division, metabolism)
What is the function of the nuclear pores of the nuclear envelope?
- regulate passage of mols between nucleus + cytoplasm
