Eukaryotic cell structures 1 Flashcards
(28 cards)
What is the role of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
Responsible for lipid and carbohydrate synthesis and storage
What is the role of the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
Responsible for synthesis and transport of proteins
What does the nucleolus do?
Produces ribosomes
What does the nucleus do?
Controls the metabolic processes within the cells
Controls protein synthesis
What do the nuclear pores do?
Allow things to go in and out of the cell
What does the golgi body do?
Modifies and packages proteins
Produces secretory products
What do ribosomes do?
They are the site of protein synthesis
What does mitochondria do?
Site of cellular respiration
What do vesicles do?
Transport organelles around the cell
What do lysosomes do?
They are a type of vesicle
That contains hydrolytic enzymes that break down waste materials in the cell
What do chloroplasts do?
They are the site of photosynthesis
What do centrioles do?
Assemble and organize spindle fibers in cell division
What do flagella do?
Enable cells to move
Detect chemical changes
What do cilia do?
Stationary cilia - nose
Mobile cilia - create a current, they sweep mucus away from the throat
What is the function of the cell wall?
Provides a barrier
What is a membrane bound organelle?
They have their own membrane that holds them together
What shape is the DNA in a pro cell?
Circular
What shape is the DNA in a eukaryotic cell?
Linear
What is the cell wall made of in fungi?
Chitin
What is the cell wall made of plants?
cellulose
Do eukaryotic cells have membrane bound organelles?
yes, they have both
What is the difference between the ribosomes in a eukaryotic cell and a prokaryotic cell?
Eukaryotic ribosomes are bigger
What is the size of a ribosomes in a eukaryotic cell?
80s
What is the size of a ribosome in a prokaryotic cell?
70s
