What is euthanasia ?
Literally translates from greek to a good death,
Understood to mean assisted suicide when an individual is unhappy with their quality of life
What is the ethical definition of Suicide ?
When a person makes a voluntary choice to end their own life
What is active euthanasia ?
A treatment is given that directly causes the death of the individual
What is non-voluntary euthanasia ?
Where a severely or terminally ill persons life is ended without their consent
What is passive euthanasia ?
Where a treatment is withheld and this indirectly causes the death of the individual
What is assisted suicide ?
Where a person who wishes to die is helped by another person, they may or may not have a serious terminal illness
What is the idea of sanctity of life ?
The idea that life is intrinsically sacred and valuable
What is quality of life ?
The idea that life value depends on certain attributes or goods for example happiness or autonomy
What is voluntary euthanasia ?
Where a persons life is ended at their own request
