What are your immediate actions in an accident?

A

Brake to emergency and make emergency call
Confirm OLE switch off if required
Apply hazard lights or red lights forwards
Check if other lines obstructed- if unsure, treat as obstructed
When signal protection confirmed, place TCOC on all affected lines including your own if whole train de-railed
If signal protection cannot be provided or signaller can’t be contacted- emergency protection
If train fails in TBW/ESW, only protect own line 1 1/4 miles to rear and apply TCOC

Red at rear and white on front. Inform signaller of exact location of remaining portion

Emergency protection Do not pass next stop signal or leave the section/single line section until signaller is informed of division

Immediately, then tell signaller at next stop signal.

Secure train, do not disturb evidence. Note short-life evidence such as brake gauge and main reservoir gauge readings

Return to your train unless you haven't contacted the signaller or if the signaller has told you that the assisting train will come from the rear and pick you up (poor visibility). You must stay at this location until the assisting train arrives.

Speak to driver of failed train via GSMR for info before making movement If you cannot contact driver, follow signaller's instructions Proceed towards failed train at caution- no more than 25mph Look out for driver in poor visibility and pick them up (if required) Only enter tunnel if driver already picked up or if you know that the driver isn't in the tunnel If driver not at agreed location, stop and wait for them to arrive Assisting driver must ensure train is coupled correctly with brake continuity

If you are the assisting driver and you are assisting from the rear, what must your actions be?
Temporarily isolate TPWS before the movement (with permission) if required to drive from other than leading cab. Reinstate TPWS after movement finished.
