Evaluation For Duration In STM Flashcards
(3 cards)
Peterson and Peterson: operationalise
ThanThe researchers were able to operationalise memory to whether they remembered the trigrams or not. Therefore, it has been made absolutely clear what is meant by duration in the STM as they were studied and measured in our experiment. Therefore, it provides a clear and objective definition of even complex variables. It also makes it easier for other researchers to replicate a study and check for reliability.
Peterson and Peterson: artificial stimulus
The study used an artificial and meaningless stimuli This is a weakness because they do not reflect how memory works in everyday life, so they lack external validity. Low mundane realism. If perhaps the material was then perhaps the STM could be longer. E.g. if a real name was used, then they could remember more and we might not have seen a rapid decrease in recall after 18-30 seconds, if the stimuli was not artificial, duration of STM may longer than initially thought
Peterson and Peterson: lab setting
- Lab setting so the research was able to manipulate and control the variables therefore, rehearsal was able to be prevented so we are testing STM instead of LTM, high internal validity because we are measuring what we are supposed to. There also controlled for extraneous variables such as rehearsal. However, they may have been testing retroactive interference because the new information (counting down in threes) is disrupting the old memory (trigrams)
