Q

Rutted disagreed that maternal deprivation caused delinquency. He studied 150 English families and found that there were four factors that could cause deprivation. He found that if two or more factors were present then behavioural problems and and psychiatric problems increased. What are those four factors?

A
Family discord (divorce)
Social deviance of parents (criminal records or psychiatric problems)
Social disadvantage (housing, low income)

Q

What is the weakness of doing a case study?

A

It can be subjective because researchers can interpret data to fit their theories. Rutter 1981 suggests that many participants had multiple mother figure changes so it could be privation not deprivation

Q

Why is not looking at the reasons for the separation a weakness

A

It may not have been the separation causing the deprivation, but the disruptive nature of the family eg alcoholism
