Evaluation of Milgram's study Flashcards
(22 cards)
in the baseline (Milgram’s original study) the experimenter wore what?
a lab coat
in one variation, an ordinary member of the public in everyday clothes conducted the experiment and prompts, what did the obedience drop to?
dropped to 20%
why are people more likely to obey someone in uniform?
i think obedience rates are higher when someone is wearing uniform because they are widely recognised in society as symbols of authority. We accept that someone in uniform has legitimate authority in comparison to someone without uniform who has less right to expect authority
research conducted by who, both supported and shown that authority figures in uniform add to legitimacy and increase obedience?
Bickerman (1974)
what was Bickmans study ?
Bickerman study was to see the likelihood that people would carry out certain tasks, pick up rubbish, lend a coin and move away from a bus stop for people in a ordinary clothes, a milk man and a security guard
what was the findings of Bickmans study, what does this show? (TST)
Bickmans study shown that 30% of ppl obey a civilian. 47% of ppl obeyed the milkman. 76% of ppl obeyed the security guard. TST uniform is a powerful factor in people’s willingness to obey
what two pieces of research refuted and shown the biases within milgram’s study ? (give names)
Sheridan and King (1972)
and
Kilham and Mann (1974)
research conducted by Kilham and Mann (1974) showed that: highest obedience levels in spanish ppts were 90% in comparison to lowest cultural obedience in …… which was 28%.
TST?
AUSTRALIA
TST obedience varies in culture as Spain obedience level are high whereas in Australia obedience is low
what was Sheridan and King’s study?
males and females PPTs gave real (very mild) shocks to puppies even though they thought they were increasing by 15 Volts each time. Undetectable gas used and puppy fell unconscious.
what were the findings of Sheridan and Kings research and what did this show?
they found out that 54% of M and 100% of F obeyed up to 450V. TST - Milgram’s study was androcentric (focused on Males) as more females obeyed.
who conducted research in obedience in the field on nurses and obedience?
hofling 1966
what method did hofling use to carry out his research? (the procedure)
method: “Dr Smith Phoned 22 nurses in different hospitals asked each nurse to check the drug cupboard astrogen (fake drug) adn to administer 20mg (2x the recommended dose)
what did holfing find out?
he found that 21 nurses were prepared to break hospital rules and obey
what was bad about the 21 nurses in hofling listing the “Dr.Smith”?
it broke several rules:
a. nurses should not take prescriptions on the phone
b. nurses should not take orders from unknown doctor
what study shown that milgram’s study has temporal valdity?
J. Burger
what was J. Burger’s study?
males and females are involved, screen ppts for certain factors, took into account more ethical issues and looked at personality factors
ppts were not given the opportunity to go over 150v
70% of ppts were prepared to go over 150v
in j.burger variation of milgram’s study was there any difference between females and males?
there was no difference
what did J.Burgers study prove that milgram’s study have?
temporal validity
what ethical issues are involved in milgram’s study?
deception and protection from harm
how were the ppts in milgram’s study deceived?
the ppts were told it was real study and given standardised prompts that convinced them to keep going with the experiment
despite milgram’s first experiment being a lab, hsi study still has ecological validity, how?
this is because the study has shown to be repeated in other circumstance such as milgram’s own run down office block and support from other research
Fill in the gaps: milgram’s study can been to lack …. validity because ppt obeyed the ….. but this doesn’t mean they would obey in …. However, the study is reliable because it can be replicated as the IV can be …. and the DV can be ….
