Evaluation of MSM Flashcards
(14 cards)
What studies support the MSM?
- HM.
- Korsakoff’s syndrome.
What did HM suffer from?
Severe and frequent epilepsy.
Where were HM’s seizures based?
The hippocampus.
How did doctors treat HM?
Surgically removed part of his brain around the hippocampus.
What were the results of the surgery?
- Reduced his epilepsy.
- Lead to memory loss.
What were the effects of HM’s surgery on his memory?
- Able to form short-term memories.
- Unable to form long-term memories.
How does HM’s study support the MSM?
Supports the idea that different types of memory are separate systems in the brain.
What is Korsakoff’s syndrome?
Amnesia caused by chronic alcoholism.
What are the effects of Korsakoff’s syndrome on the memory?
- Their STM is unaffected.
- Their LTM is poor.
How does Korsakoff’s syndrome support the MSM?
Shows the STM and LTM are separate stores.
What are the limitations of the MSM?
- Rehearsal isn’t always necessary.
- Rehearsal isn’t always possible.
- Reductionist.
Why is rehearsal not necessary?
People don’t always spend time rehearsing, yet the information is still transferred to the LTM.
What information cannot be rehearsed?
Smells.
How is the MSM reductionist?
- Assumes there is only one short-term store and one long-term store.
- This has been disproved by case studies.
