Q

How is MP’s being elected by the people an advantage and disadvantage?

A

+ MPs are our voice in parliament, who make law on our behalf and they can be removed if the public are not satisfied
- MPs tend to vote with their party and ignore their constituents wishes. Also, the governments controls the commons as it has more MPs so its bills are nearly always a success which is not very democratic.

Q

The parliamentary process is very detailed?

A

+ As there are several stages meaning the process is detailed, good quality law is produced. There are 2 houses checking the quality and we get multiple opinions (there are 650 MPs and 800 lords) meaning less bias.
- The detailed process means that the process is too slow so some bills run out of time and fail.
Also, if the bill is over-amended the bills loses is original intention.

Q

Lords have to be consulted?

A

+ This prevents the abuse of government power bc the House of Commons are also involved also resulting in a mixture of experience and opinions

  • Although the lords have to be consulted, they are unelected so it’s not democratic. In addition to this, hereditary peers are only there because their fathers were which can result in the same type of old/out of touch people.

Q

Private members bill?

A

+ The private members bill means that individuals are allowed to introduce a bill, this could perhaps be on behalf of constituents or a good cause.

  • However, the chances of this bill being passed are rarely successful and normally receive low support. Also, a lack of time means that many bills wont be introduced
