Whiskey Rebellion (1794)
Farmers rebelled against a tax on whiskey. Washington sent militia to stop the revolt, proving the new government could enforce its laws
New Republic Era
Time after the Constitution was adopted. Focused on building the government, economy, and national identity. Included Washington’s and Jefferson’s presidencies
XYZ Affair (1797-98)
French officials (XYZ) demanded bribes from U.S. diplomats before negotiations.
Led to aint-French sentiment and an undeclared naval war (Quasi-War)
Alien & Sedition Acts (1798)
- Made it harder for immigrants to become citizens
- Allowed the President to deport foreigners
- Punished critics of the government, violating free speech
Louisiana Purchase (October 20, 1803)
An agreement approved by Senate which roughly doubled the size of the U.S.
War of 1812
- Britain was seizing American ships & impressing (forcing) American sailors into the British navy
- The British were arming Native Americans to fight against U.S. settlers in the Northwest Territory.
- War Hawks (like Henry Clay) pushed for war to defend U.S. honor and expand territory.
Era of Good Feelings (1815-25)
- During Monroe’s presidency: a time of political unity & national pride
- Ended due to sectionalism & debates over slavery
