Diceases in the trenches
Trench foot caused by muddy conditions which could lead to amputation of the leg
Trench fever caused by lice digging deep into soldiers uniform and biting them
Trench mouth caused by lack of hygiene leading to mouth ulcers bleeding gums and bad breath
Living conditions
It was unpleasant men lived in dugouts
Soldiers got very bored and often sad around and slept
The lack of food was a problem and often soldiers were lacking nutrients they were given tinned bully beef and rock solid biscuits.
Technology of war
Rifle
The rifle was the standard weapon of the infantry solider it was a gun designed for accuracy and long range shooting

Caused severe casualties and was very important in defending the trenches
Gas attack
Gas was released from canisters and drifted across no man’s land causing soldiers to choke
Recruitment
Men aged between 19-30 were called out to become a soldier for British army Kitchener would ask many volunteers and had a number in just 2 days.
Animals in ww1
Fox: mascot/ kept morales high amongst the men
Horses: carried things like supplies and the wounded
Cats: mascot/ would hunt rats and help others bond
Camels: would carry wounded men to safety on the north west frontier of India in 1917 they could carry heavy loads

Gave the government emergency powers to introduce measures which it felt were necessary to win the war.

Key industries like farming were taken over the result was the goverment wanted farms and colemines to produce as much as possible to help war effort.
In 1915 the goverment took over munitions factories this was to make more for war instead of ‘unecessary’ things like weapons
The goverment censored newspapers letters etc this was so spies couldn’t gather information and plans enemies had
Conscription
Men were forced to go to war and it was against the law if they refused it was introduced because eventually there was a shortage of men signing up likely because the truth was beginning to come out
Conscientious objector
Someone who never agreed with war and even if they were forced to go to war they still refused to go
An absolutist
Someone who absolutely never agreed with war and wouldn’t put any effort in for it
Alternativist
Someone who took part in another role for war instead of military work
Reasons men objected to taking part in war
They never wanted to get hurt
They couldn’t because of religion
They were against violence in general
Rationing
Allowing each person to have a fixed amount of something, for instance, in this case, was food

Why rationing started
The German u-boat campaign was introduced during ww1 to stop importing certain foods so that Britain got so hungry that they wouldn’t want to participate anymore

Ration cards were cards each family received that would get taken to shops to get stamped to prove they had been there for their weekly items that they could buy certain amounts of

Women weren’t allowed to vote and didn’t have a say in how the country was ran
Women had no rights and had many difficulties in their lives

When women got married their belongings were their husbands responsibility
Divorce was harder for women than it was men because most of the time men got custody of the children

Women were less educated than men because men got a better education which meant there were less job opportunities for women and universities and colleges never wanted them

Eventually divorce was easier
Women could become teachers and nurses
They eventually got the same education as boys
They could keep onto their properties such as wages etc

The suffragists were a peaceful group who would try to get the governments attention in a peaceful way

Public meetings , organised petitions, letters to politicians, published newspapers etc
The suffragettes
Were a violent group who believed taking action was going to be a better way of getting the goverments attention
