SC5-LW14 relates the structure and function of living things to their classification, survival and reproduction
SC5-LW15 explains how new biological evidence changes people’s understanding of the world
SC5-LW1c, LW3, LW4c,d
SC5-LW1 Multicellular organisms rely on coordinated and interdependent internal systems to respond to changes in their
environment. (ACSSU175)
SC5-LW3 Advances in scientific understanding often rely on developments in technology, and technological advances are often
linked to scientific discoveries. (ACSHE158, ACSHE192)
SC5-LW4 The theory of evolution by natural selection explains the diversity of living things and is supported by a range of scientific
evidence. (ACSSU185)
- structure functions of living things –> classification, survival and reproduction
- types of biological evidence –> change perspective
- multicellular vs unicellular, coordinate, interdependent internal systems –> respond to changes
- developments in technology –> scientific discoveries
- theory of evolution, natural selection -> explain diversity of living things + support from scientific evidence
- Construct and interpret pedigree chart problems
1.2
three things that evolution are and are not
- a change in genetic traits NOT acquired
- occurs to whole population NOT individual organisms
- occurs over many generations NOT a single lifetime
Explain why variation within a population is essential for evolution.
- evolution - is due to variation (a small change in DNA) of a population over generations
- genetic diversity - allows the species with specific variation to have greater chances of surviving –> mechanism for evolution
four principles at work in evolution
—variation (small changes in DNA), inheritance, selection(natural selection, prey-predator, selection pressure) and time(overtime)
VIST
ie Species don’t evolve in isolation (they can if there is environmental
identify how rise of antibiotic-resistance in superbugs occur
Selection pressures can either increase or decrease the frequency of a genetic trait, identify
Traits that help organisms survive and reproduce become more frequent. (favoured)
Traits that make it more difficult for organisms to survive and reproduce become** less frequent.**
natural selection by identifying two reasons.
- a selection pressure
ie Predators acted as a selection pressure by hunting more white moths than black moths - defintion of natural selection - The survival of organisms that are better adapted to their environment
Camouflage increased the likelihood of black peppered moths surviving and reproducing
