Evolution Flashcards
(11 cards)
Define Natural Selection
the process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring.
Define Genetic Drift
variation in the relative frequency of different genotypes in a small population, owing to the chance disappearance of particular genes as individuals die or do not reproduce.
Define Genetic Variation
a term used to describe the variation in the DNA sequence in each of our genomes.
What is fitness in natural selection?
a measure of how well organisms survive and reproduce, with emphasis on “reproduce.”
Define Differential Reproduction
the process of selective breeding of plants and animals, where certain variations that are useful are preserved and passed on to the next generation.
Define Genetic Adaptation
A biological characteristic with a heritable basis that improves reproduction and/or survival and results from evolution by natural selection.
What is the pinky finger of evolution?
chance events
What is the ring finger of evolution?
selective mating
What is the middle finger of evolution?
random mutation
What is the pointer finger of evolution?
gene flow/ immigration and emigration
What is the thumb finger of evolution?
natural selection and adaptation
