Evolution Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is acquired trait
A modification to the organism after birth
What Adaptation
An inherented characteristics which increases organism’s chance of survival
Common ancestor
Ancient species which developed into different modern species
What is a mutation
A random change in a DNA sequence that affects genetic information
What is a population
Group of individual of that can breed and produce fertile offspring
What is specialtion
Formation of a new species
What is evolution
A change in a kind of organism over time;processes by which modern organisms have descended from ancient organisms
What is extinction
Disappearance of a species from all parts of its geographical range.
What is a fossil
Preserved remains or evidence of an ancient organism
What is homologous structure
Structures have different mature forms in various organisms but develop from the same embryonic tissue (had a common ancestor)
What is a vestigial structure????
Structures which serve no useful purpose in an organism
What is natural selection????
Process by which individuals that are better suited to their environment survive& reproduce most successfully
What is overproduction???
To many offspring, environment can’t support them all
What is variation???
Genetic differences within a population
What is Struggle for survival???
Environment puts pressure on population so that only some survive (organisms who survive are “lucky” enough to “fit into” the environment better than others-so these individuals who are “lucky” produce more offspring-numbers increase)
What is selective breeding??
Nature provides variation and humans select the parents of the next generation!
