EW Terms Flashcards
Allele
A version of a gene
Amino Acid
The building blocks used to make proteins during translation.
Animalia
Group of heterotrophic organisms that are eukaryotic with no cell walls.
Archaeans
Group of prokaryotic, unicellular organisms that live in harsh environments.
Autotroph
An organism that uses energy from the sun or other chemicals to make their own food (producers).
Bacteria
Group of prokaryotic, unicellular organisms with cell walls that live in most environments.
Decomposer
Organisms that recycle nutrients in the environment.
DNA
The code for how to build proteins and RNA molecules.
Ecology
The study of how organisms interact with biotic and abiotic factors in their environment.
Evolution
Gradual change in a species through adaptations over time.
Fungus
Group of heterotrophic organisms with cell walls that absorb nutrients from the environment.
Gene
A set of instructions in the DNA for how to build a particular protein.
Genotype
The pairs of genes you inherit
Heterotroph
Organisms that cannot synthesize their own food and must obtain it ready made (consumer).
Heterozygous
Having two alleles that are different
Homozygous
Having two alleles that are the same
Natural selection
Mechanism for change in populations occurring when organisms with favorable traits survive, thrive, and pass on those traits.
Phenotype
The appearance of a trait determined by pairs of genes
Plantae
Group of organisms that are eukaryotic, have cell walls, and can photosynthesize.
Protein
A biological molecule in living things made up of amino acids
Protista
Group of extremely varied eukaryotes that are mostly aquatic and unicellular.
RNA
The molecules that assist in making proteins during transcription & translation.
Symbiosis
Two or more organisms living together.
Transcription
The process of producing RNA from the DNA code.
