1

Most common form of muscular dystrophy

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

2

DMD is caused by

defective gene on X chromosome --> responsible for production of **dystrophin**

3

DMD - first seen ?

postural muscles of hip/shoulders first effected; asymptomatic at birth

4

Age that DMD may be evident

2-3 y/o, muscle weakness

5

Mortality in DMD is often d/t

resp/cardiac complications

6

Traumatic head injuries can cause

1. skull fracture
2. parenchymal injury (TBI)
3. traumatic vascular injury

7

TBI can lead to

both primary and secondary injury

8

secondary head injury

- delayed
- result of: swelling/release of intracellular ions/transmitters

9

treatment of secondary TBI

1. craniotomy
2. infusion of medications that decrease excitability (i.e. magnesium)

10

diffuse brain injury

diffuse axonal injury (concussion)

11

Concussion that does NOT include LOC

Mild, Grade I, Grade II Concussion

12

Concussion with LOC < 5 minutes

Grade III

13

Concussion with LOC > 5 minutes

Grade IV

14

Grade IV concussion involves which portion of brain?

RAS - Reticular Activating System

15

Focal brain injury

involves focused area of brain
i.e. contusion, laceration

16

Hematoma is an example of

traumatic vascular injury

17

most common cause of epidural hematoma

laceration of middle meningeal artery (d/t skull fracture)

18

A delayed LOC may be d/t

epidural hematoma

19

why is sleep a problem during monitoring a brain injury?

-cannot monitor consciousness if sleeping
-sleep is NOT the problem

20

Loss of consciousness --> coma when?

LOC > 6 hours

21

subdural hematoma - most common cause

tearing of bridging veins

22

bleeding of the brain

hematoma

23

Epidural hematoma

between skull bone & dura mater

24

subdural hematoma

beneath dura mater & arachnoid/pia mater

25

intracranial hemorrhages

within intracerebral blood vessels

26

which is more worrisome: delayed or immediate LOC?

delayed - possible bleed and increased ICP/herniation

27

embolic stroke - most common cause

Afib from LH

28

global ischemia d/t _____ stroke

hemorrhagic

29

Features of stroke

1. sudden onset
2. focal involvement of CNS
3. lack of rapid resolution
4. vascular cause

30

Responsible for motor output of speech

Brocas Area
