Exam 1 Flashcards
(26 cards)
Five strands of environmental education program of the national park services
1- variety and similarity: similarity and difference allows us to group things
2- pattern: how things are physically arranged
3- interaction and interdependence: the change between two things and the dependence for each other
4- continuity and change: everything is becoming something else yet retaining a part of the old
5-adaption and evolution: evolution is a biological adaptation by which organisms change their form or other characteristics
Succession
The natural transition of one type of plant and animal community to another
Climax and subclimax
Climax: is the state of a plant and animal community which is final step of succession for a given area and climate
Subclimax: is a stage of succession along the way toward climax
The water cycle
Water evaporates into the air as water vapor, condenses into clouds that move about the land and sea, and falls back to the earth as rain, snow, hail, sleet. Then it evaporates into air again as water vapor and the process starts over
The food chain
Producers, consumers, and decomposer
Ecology
The study of animals and plants and their relationships to each other and to their environment
Protozoa
Simplest one cell
Coelenteratea
(Toxins) Jelly fish
Platy- helminthes
Flat worms
Nfmate-helminthes
Round worms
Mollusca
Gastropods: Snails
Bivalves: oysters
Cephalopod: shrimp
Annelida
Worms that are segmented and have circulatory system.
Arthropoda
Insects: 6 legs
Arachnid: 8 legs
Myriapods: many legs
Crustaceans: hard shell
Invertebrates
Porifera
Echinodermata
Chordata
Have spinal cords (humans)
Lower chordates
Don’t have vertebrates
Vertebrates
Fish: sharks have cartilage instead of bone
Amphibians: born with gills then close and use lungs
Reptiles: don’t have gills, born with lungs
Birds: worm blooded animals, some sort of beaks
Mammals: have mammary glands and a diaphragm
Thallophyta (simplest)
Fungi: live off dead material
(Bacteria, mushrooms)
Algae: no leaves, no roots, reproduce by scores
(All colors of algae)
Lichens: mix of fungi and algae (two cells living together)
Bryophyta
Mosses: grow by scores
Spermatophyta (most complicated)
Seed producing plants
Angiosperms: seed protected by shell (fruit plants), requires pollen from male to female
Gymnosperms: seeds are unprotected by shell (conifers), have cone
Pteridophyte
Ferns: grow out of the ground, no roots, have shoots but no leaves
