Chemical degradation

A

Organic matter, house fertility and enzymes.

17
Q

Issue of more land

A

the land can no longer support the # of people in the world so we need more land to support them. however if we treated the land better then we could produce more on less

18
Q

Increasing production

A

we can, but it stresses the soil. We don’t know the limit of of plant production. there is increasing yields, but there will be a point where it will level off and we will no longer e able to support the population. Also the soil will degrade and productivity will drop we will not be able to continue the way we are doing

19
Q

cheap energy

A

the cheap oil made the price of food drop and is making it less expensive, however when the price increases the food prices will be increased.

20
Q

Rate of soil formation

A

0.466 T/ac/yr or 1 mt/Ha/yr. this is very general in cache valley it is much lower. Soil will never generate back in our lifetime

21
Q

Point source

A

You look at it and cans solve it

22
Q

Non-point source

A

can not specifically identify

23
Q

Concern about erosion

A

Big concern if you like to eat. Food will be grown on land.

24
Q

Obstacles to conservation

A
  1. Tradition: the way its always been
  2. Culture insecurity : may not have food
  3. Money
    4.
25
Soil factors for conservation
Texture, Climate, Slope, aspect, all sorts of things interact together
26
Processes that elevate land
1. Erosion and deposition 2. Plate techtonics 3. Organic deposition
27
Stream systems
1. open- Colorado goes to ocean | 2. Closed- Bear River does not go to ocean
28
Mass wasting
Driven by gravity. water is lubricant
29
Sedimentary landforms
1. Wind | 2. Water
30
Water landforms
1. Flood plane 2. Terraces 3. Alluvial Fans 4. Piedmont 5. Deltas 6. Bottom deposits
31
Wind Landforms
1. Sand: Sanddunes 2. Silt: Loess 3. Clay: Clay blown areas 4. Volcanic ash
