Provides rooms, meals, laundry, and supervision to independent residents in a homelike setting. Meets basic needs, also has emergency call system and 24 hour caregiver. Residents typically dress themselves and tend to their bathing and grooming needs. They get help with personal care/drug reminders.
Board & Care Home (group home)
Provides housing, personal care, support services, health care, and actives in a homelike setting. Looks like an apartment building, sometimes apart of retirement community or nursing center. Person has a room, help is given with personal care, meals, or taking meds. 2-3 meals are provides along with housekeeping, laundry, transportation, and social/rec services. Access to health/medical care.
Assisted Living Residences (ALRs)
Provides healthcare and nursing care to people who need regular or continuous care. Licensed nurses are required. Residents have more severe health problems. Medical care, nursing care, dietary services, rehabilitation, rec, social, laundry, housekeeping, and maintenance are provided.
Nursing Center (Nursing facility or nursing home)
Provides healthcare and nursing care for residents who have many or severe health problems or who need rehabilitation. May be apart of nursing center or hospital. Many are admitted from hospital for recovery, rehab, injury, or surgery. Some return home and others do not.
Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF)
An ongoing illness, slow or gradual in onset. Has no cure. Can be controlled & complications prevented with proper treatment.
Chronic Illness
A sudden illness from which the person is expected to recover. May require hospital care.
Acute Illness
Can be spread from one person to another, and these are prevented in long term care. (Cold/Flu)
Communicable Diseases
Helps persons return to their highest possible level of physical/mental function.
Rehabilitation or restorative care
The process of becoming weak from illness or lack of exercise.
Deconditioning
A health care agency or program for people who are terminally ill. They no longer respond to treatments, typically have less than 6 months to live. Focus is on comfort, not cure.
Hospice
Units for people with alzheimer and other dementias. Typically closed off from the rest of the center so patients can wander.
Alzheimer Units
A more complex care unit that requires intensive, skilled nursing care. The stay is typically for a few weeks or months. May be called patients or clients.
Rehabilitation and Subacute Care
The person who plans, directs, and oversees the delivery of health care.
Administrator
Reports to the administrator
Department Directors
A doctor who is required by law to be in the nursing center. Consults with staff about medical problems and gives guidance about resident care and programs.
Medical director
A registered nurse (RN) who is responsible for the entire nursing staff, including giving care.
Director of Nursing (DON)
Usually RNs who assist the DON, they manage and carry our nursing department functions.
Nurse Managers
People who coordinate resident care for a certain shift.
Shift Managers
Typically RNs, sometimes LPNs, who are responsible for all resident care and the actions of nursing staff on a unit.
Charge Nurse (Unit Manager or Nurse Supervisor)
Involves those who provide nursing care. (RNs, LPNs, and nursing assistant) All focus on the needs of residents and families.
The nursing team
Has completed 2,3,or 4 year program and passed licensing test. Assess, makes nursing diagnoses, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care. They develop care plans and provide care. Delegate nursing care plans and tasks to the nursing team. They also carry out doctors orders, or delegate them to LPN or nursing assistant. DO NOT prescribe treatments or drugs. Can study to become nurse practitioners.
Registered Nurse (RN)
Has completed 1 year nursing program and passed licensing test. They are supervised by RNs and licensed doctors, have fewer responsibilities and functions than an RN. They need little supervision when the person’s care is simple and they’re stable.
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN/LVN)
Give basic nursing care under supervision of a licensed nurse. Give much of the care provided in nursing centers. Must have formal training and pass a competency test.
Nursing Assistant (Nurse Aide, etc)
Involves the many healthcare workers whose skills and knowledge focus on the person’s total care. Works together to meet each person’s needs. RN leads.
