Exam 1: Posterior Triangle of the Neck Flashcards
(24 cards)
What makes up the anterior, posterior and superior boundaries of the anterior triangle?
Midline
SCM
Body of mandible
What makes up the floor of the anterior triangle?
Visceral structures of the pharynx, larynx and thyroid gland.
What makes up the roof of the anterior triangle?
Investing layer of cervical fascia.
What are the 4 subdivisions of the anterior triangle?
- Inferior carotid (muscular)
- Superior carotid (carotid)
- Submental
- Digastric (submandibular)
What are the boundaries of the inferior carotid (muscular) triangle?
Midline (hyoid to sternum)
SCM
Superior belly of omohyoid
What are the boundaries of the superior carotid (carotid) triangle?
SCM
Superior omohyoid
Posterior digastric
What are the boundaries of the sub mental triangle?
Midline (hyoid to mandible)
Hyoid bone
Anterior digastric
What are the boundaries of the digastric (submandibular) triangle?
Lower body of the mandible
Anterior digastric
Posterior digastric
What are the 4 infra hyoid muscles?
- Omohyoid
- Sternohyoid
- Sternothyroid
- Thyrohyoid
What is the group actions for the infra hyoid muscles?
Depress the hyoid
Depress the mandible
What is the nerve supply to the infra hyoid muscles?
Spinal nerves C1,2,3 via the cervical plexus and ansa hypoglossi.
What 5 muscles make up the supra hyoid muscles and which nerves are they innervated by?
- Anterior digastric (CN V)
- Posterior digastric (CN VII)
- Mylohyoid (CN V)
- Geniohyoid (spinal nerve C1)
- Stylohyoid (CN VII)
What are the attachments for posterior digastric?
Common tendon
Mastoid process
What are the attachments for the anterior digastric?
Common tendon
Inner surface of mandible
What are the attachments for the mylohyoid?
Mylohyoid line
Hyoid bone
What are the attachments for the geniohyoid?
Mental (genial) spines
Hyoid
What are the attachments for the stylohyoid?
Styloid process
Hyoid
What are the group actions of the supra hyoid muscles?
Depress the mandible.
Elevate the hyoid.
Where is the carotid pulse located?
Common carotid artery in the superior carotid triangle.
This is a chemo receptor (senses changes in O2) and is innervated by CN IX.
Carotid body
This is a pressure receptor that is innervated by CN IX and lays distal to the common carotid and proximal to the internal carotid.
Carotid sinus
This vein joins with the subclavian vein. Many veins drain into it.
Internal jugular vein.
What nerves innervate the anterior triangle?
- Spinal accessory (XI)
- Hypoglossal (XII)
- Cervical plexus (anterior primary rami of spinal nerves C1-4) Vagus (X)
What glands and lymph nodes are in the anterior triangle?
Submandibular (digastric triangle)
Submandibular and Submental lymph nodes.
Deep cervical nodes (along internal jugular).
