Representational
Depicts objects or people that we can recognize.
Non-objective
Depicts subjects’ matter that is unrecognizable.

Artists alter an image from an easily recognizable subject

Elements
Color, form, line, mass, shape, space, texture, times & motion, value, and volume.
Principles
Balance, contrast, emphasis, focal point, pattern, proportion, rhythm, scale, unity, and variety.
Hue
General classification of a color; the distinctive characteristics of a color as seen in the visible spectrum, such as: Green, Red,Blue,Yellow
Additive Color(RBG)
The additive (light) theory deals w/ radiated & filtered light.
Subtractive Color (CMYK)
The subtractive (pigment) theory deals with how white light is absorbed & reflected off of colored surfaces.
Color
The optical effect caused when reflected white light of the spectrum is divided into separate wavelength.
Pigment
The closed material used in paints. Often made from finely ground minerals.
Additive Color
The colors produced from light.
Medium (plural media)
The material on or from which an artist chooses to make a work of art, for example canvas and oil paint, marble, engraving, video, or architecture.
Binder
A substance that makes pigments adhere to a surface.
Subtractive color
The colors produced from pigment.
Primary colors
Three basic colors from which all others are derived.
Tertiary colors
Colors that can be mixed from a secondary & primary color.
Complementary Colors
Colors opposite one another on the color wheel
Impressionist, Impression
In the visual arts, a late 19th century style conveying the fleeting impression of the effects of light; impressionists were artists working in the style.
Value
The lightness or darkness of a plane or area.
Tint
A color lighter in value than its purest state.
Shade
A color darker in value than its purest state.
Saturation (Chroma)
The degree of purity of a color.
Plane
2D surface on which an artist can create a drawing or painting. Planed can also be implied in a composition by areas that face toward, parallel to, or away from a light source.
