What is a covenant?
- A sacred agreement
- The strongest possible pledge between two parties
What does it mean to have a covenant with God?
- A special, loving relationship in which God blesses the people and the people live as God wants us to;
- Re-creates the relationship between God and God’s people

Days of Creation Story 1
- God creates light and separates it from darkness.
- God separates the water above (sky) from the water below (sea).
- God separates the water below (sea) from the **dry land. **
- God populates the sky with sun, moon and stars.
- God populates the air with birds, and the sea with fish.
- God populates the **land with animals and with people. **
- God celebrates. He blesses the day and rests.
Religious Truths Creation Story 1
- There is only one God: Only God is responsible for creation.
- God planned creation: Everything God did was deliberately done.
- God created everything good: All of creation has goodness because it is made by God’s design.
- God made the Sabbath day holy: God establishes the Holiness of Creation in the day of rest – Sunday.
- Humanity is made in the image of God; possesses human dignity: God’s goodness is in all of creation. The beauty of creation reflects the beauty of the Creator.

Similarities between Creations 1 & 2
God created human beings.
God creates plants and fruit.
God makes humans the dominant species.
God makes birds and animals.
The universe was desolate in the beginning.
God is the creator in both myths.
Difference between Creations 1 & 2
Genesis 1 - it states that animals, and humans, were created on day six.
Genesis 2 - it implies that humans were created before animals.

What is Sin?
Sin is the name we give to the actions that harm our relationships.
Sin has two main parts:
- Breaking Rules
- Harming / Breaking relationships
MORTAL SIN
- any type of sin that destroys our relationship with God.
- The sin is a grave one [against God’s commandments]
- We know that the act is very wrong.
- We still choose to commit it.
ex) murder
VENIAL SIN:
any type of sin that harms our relationship with God and others.
ex) swearing, name calling, not helping someone
The consequences that sin separates/divides us from:
- Our selves
- Others
- God
- Nature
- Nations

- Sin alienates or divides people from themselves.
- Sin alienates people from God.
- Sin alienates people from nature.
Sacraments of Initiation
Baptism:
- We receive new life in Christ, and original sin is removed.
- Sign: Pouring of water.
Confirmation:
- Strengthens our faith and confirms Baptismal promises.
- Sign: Laying on of hands and anointing with oil.
Eucharist:
- Nourishes our faith as we receive the Body and Blood of Christ.
- Sign: Bread and wine.
Sacraments of Healing
Anointing of the Sick:
This sacrament connects a sick person’s suffering to Jesus, offering forgiveness of sins.
- Sign: Oil (symbol of strength) and the laying of hands.
Reconciliation/Penance:
We receive God’s forgiveness and healing grace by confessing sins and being truly sorry.
- Sign: Confession of sins and the priest’s words of absolution.
Sacraments at the Service of Communion
Holy Orders:
1. Men are ordained as priests, deacons, or bishops.
2. Ordained people serve as leaders of the spiritual community and carry on the teachings of the apostles.
Sign: laying on of hands and anointing with oil by the bishop.
Matrimony:
1. A baptized man and woman are united with each other as a sign of the unity between Jesus and his Church.
2. Requires the consent of the couple, as expressed in the marriage vows.
Sign: wedding rings, oil, laying on of hands.
intro to Beatitude
- The beatitudes are attitudes of being Christian
- They are eight sources of true happiness
- They can be found in New Testament in both the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Luke
- They were said during Jesus’ famous sermon on the mount and is found in Matthew 5: 1-12
What are Beatitudes
God’s covenant with his people in the New Testament.
Why do we need the Beatitudes
- They tell us how to live good lives
- They tell us how to obtain happiness
Why should we live according to them? Beatitudes
- They give us joy on earth
- Doing the will of God will give us true happiness
