Exam 2 Flashcards
(14 cards)
Describe the conditions that affect reaction rate
- Greater surface area
- Increasing temp.
- Increasing reactant conc.
- Catalyst
So Time Cats Cross
Rate law
mathematical description of how changes in the concentration of a substance affects the reaction rate
reaction order
describes how much a change in the concentration of each substance affects the overall rate
Overall rxn order
sum of the orders for each substance present in the reaction
rate constant
proportionality constant between rate and concentration that depends on temperature
What is half-life
The time required to decrease the amount of a given reactant by ½
Catalyst
a substance that can increase the reaction rate without being consumed in the reaction
Enzyme
a biological catalyst in living things that speed up the digestion of sucrose
Enzyme v. Catalyst
Enzymes are biological catalysts, so all enzymes are catalysts but not all catalysts are enzymes.
How does M affect rxn rate
As M increases, the rate increases
As M decreases, the rate decreases
(direct relationship)
How does the temp. of the solution affect rxn rate
as temperature increases, the rate increases
(direct relationship)
How does the particle size affect rxn rate
as particle size decreases, the surface area increases, so the rate increases
indirect relationship
Explain why an egg cooks more slowly in boiling water in Denver than in New York City. (Hint: Consider the effect of temperature on reaction rate and the effect of pressure on boiling point.)
Denver is on more elevated ground than NYC that is closer to sea lvl. so there is less pressure = lower temp. = lower B.P. = slower rxn rate on Denver and an egg cooks slower
What are the units of the rate of a reaction?
M/s
molarity / seconds
