metaphor
-kind of metaphor; speaks of an impersonal thing as if it’s a person
personification
-naming a thing; the word for a part is substituted for the whole
Synecdoche ex) wheels =car
-naming a thing, a thing closely related to the thing actually meant
Metonymy ex) crown=royalty
-what it is, but also means something else
Symbol
-2 things that shouldn’t be able to exist at the same time but exist. (ex: night and day)
Paradox
-similar to exaggeration
overstatement
-one states less than one’s full meaning
understatement
-one thing is said but another is meant; the outcome of a situation is the opposite of what you expected to happen
Irony
-the attitude of the speaker towards his subject matter

-the repetition of beginning consonant sounds
