Exam 2 Flashcards
(20 cards)
Methods of lie detection
non-verbal behaviors
analysis of verbal indicators
physiological
Emotional explanation of lying
lying evokes guilt and fear
predict increase in body movements, gaze aversion, speech hsistation. voice pitch
Cognitive explanation for lying
complex, must make stuff up
Predicts increase in: gaze aversion speech errors and FEW hand/arm movements
Attempted control to lying
impression management control their behavior to refrain from giving clues away
DECREASE in body movements speech errors and gaze aversions
Non-Verbal behaviors
results of studies::
truth tellers mau experience same process as liars
incorrect beliefts about cues to deception
artifact of deception/ not real life stakes
Mann Virji study
examined non verbal behaviors during police interviews . Found that suspect DID NOT follow sterptypical nervous behaviors e.g,
gaze aversion/ increased speech body movement/hesitation
Lying did yield:
Longer pauses
decrease in hand and arm movement
fewer eye blinks
Liars stereotype
prevalent but mistaken cues that are signs of deception
Analysis of Verbal indicators
method of detection
7 verbal indicators
- Negative Statements and complaints (due to guilt/anxiety)
- Overgeneralized statements e.g., always, never nobody etc
- Irrelevant information: attempts to make good impression or substitute for info that deceiver cannot supply
- self-references- e.g., removing themselves from lie due to guilt (no I me or mine)
- direct answers: “I like john” rather than I like johns company
- length of spoke words: liars give shorter responses due to guilt and anxiety
- plausible statements: to do complexity in creating a lie
Research of VI
inconclusive in regards to negative statements, irrelevant information and overgeneralized statements.
Forsenic V.I
Produced CBCA
only requires written statement
most popular technique in Europe
CBCA main criteria
logical statement unstructured production quantity of detail reproduction of converstation unusal details admitting lack of memory
Results of CBCA studies
in general CBCA can discriminate between true and deceptive statements
CBCA Problems
Coaching
Childs Age
False accounts that are subjectively true.
How can liars behavior be predicted
verbal cues if under the right conditions. CBCA has been found to be accurate at a higher rate than other methods such as non-verbal behaviors and physiological.
Current techniques in forensic to detect lies
CBCA: statement analysis that looks at different crieterion
Polygraph test: measures physiological reactions with assumed differences . validity must be believed. it measures breathing heart rate. ask y/n questions. physioligcal reaction is compared and anaylized.
Brain fingerprinting: memory of crime stored in brain, brain wave P300 shows memory.
Two types of polygraph question techniques
control questions
Guiltiy knowledge test
Control questions
neutral revelant control
three types of questions lack of saliency between control and revelant questions
Brain finger printing
lawerence farwell: collection of crime scence photos, brain waves while looking at photos.
Photos and words are paired together/ target
irrevlant photos/words
probe picture words
Brain finger printing accuracy
120 subjects in 4 studies had 100% accuracy
