Exam 2-Exercise 2 (Integumentary System) Flashcards
(34 cards)
What are the functions of the Integumentary system?
Regulate body temp, slow water loss, hold sensory receptors, metabolism, blood reservoir, excretion
What are the layers of the skin?
Epidermis, Dermis, Subcutaneous layer/hypodermis
What are the layers of the epidermis?
Stratum Corneum,Stratum Lucidum,Stratum Granulosum, Stratum Spinosum, Stratum Basale
What are keratinocytes?
Most common cells of the skin, form in the stratum basale, tightly connected by desmosomes
What is keratin?
a protein
How do skin cells age?
Older skin cells get pushed to the surface
What is thick skin?
Has thicker layers, found in the palms, fingertips, and soles of the feet
What is thin skin?
has NO stratum lucidum; covers the rest of the body
What are melanocytes?
cells that give color
What is melanin?
a pigment that is widespread in living things
What are freckles and moles?
Local accumulations of melanin
What are the layers of the dermis?
Papillary and Reticular layer
What are eccrine sweat glands?
Found over most of the body; Functions in thermoregulation
What are apocrine glands?
Confined to axillary and anogenital areas; start functioning at puberty
What are the functions of sebaceous glands?
Produce an oily/waxy secretion, bactericidal, softens hair and skin
What are the jobs of hair?
Alerting the body to presence of insects on the skin; guarding the scalp against physical trauma, heat loss, and sunlight;providing insulation and warning signs(other species)
What is hair?
dead keratinized cells
How can skin help to maintain body temperature in hot weather?
Eccrine glands produce sweat, arrector pili relax, arterioles dilate allowing blood to get closer to the skin
How can skin help to maintain body temperature in cold weather
No sweat is produced, arrector pili contract, arterioles contract keeping blood from the skin surface, muscles contract, mitochondria convert fat directly to heat
What does cyanosis(blue) skin tell us?
Low blood oxygen level
What does red skin tell us?
Fever, hypertension, inflammation or allergy
What does pallor(white) skin tell us?
Emotions, anemia, low blood pressure
what does yellow(jaundice) skin tell?
Liver disease
What are the causes of whiteheads?
Sebaceous glands that are blocked
