  • represents a set of revised intellectual tendencies based on historical events (an intellectual shift)
  • dehumanized world/individual is lost (The Lost Generation–epigraph to The Sun Also Rises (Gertrude Stein))
  • Institutions of Western Civ had served us poorly
  • collapse in confidence in modern society (began to question your religion, what you were taught in school, questioning of what your leaders in society told you) (search for meaning by many of these writers)

  • Global event, multiple countries involved; opened world, changed people’s interests and scope of the world
  • Westerners had been told and believed for a long time that western culture was the hight of culture (arts, music, literature); had democracies, stable societies; had Christianity–the one true religion
  • belief in Western Civilization began to erode and destabilize
  • nothing made sense anymore
  • disillusionment, “The Lost Generation” (The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway)
  • 70 mil mobilized, of which 9 mil killed and 21 mil injured
  • 1st modern war: new warfare and new technologies
  • -trench warfare, mechanized warfare (machine guns & tanks), bombs could kill people a mile away
  • -1st war to use dog tags to be able to identify bodies
