What is the difference between exudates and transudates and which of those cause non-pitting edema?
exudates- high protein, yellow color, non-pitting edema
transudate- low protein, clear, pitting edema
What is the “newspaper” test?
If you can read a newspaper through it, it’s a transudate
Normally people don’t develop edema because the ___ and the ____ pressure balance on another out.
hydrostatic and osmotic
How does Hypoalbuminemia cause edema?
low albumin count leads to a decrease in osmotic pressure and fluids leak out
In what types of diseases does a person develop Hypoalbuminemia?
Liver disease, Kwashikor, nephrotic syndrome
What is myxedema?
swelling in face or legs associated with hypothyroidism
where do effusions collect and why?
in the body cavities (pleural, pericardium)
why??
What is the major cause of ascities, and why does this fluid typically only collect in the abdomen?
