What is Gender?

Is not binary and views gender as a dynamic mix of characteristics

Gender identity matches sex assigned at birth

cultural training through which we learn gender norms expected of us; names, clothes, toys, room decor

Societal expectations for conduct/behavior
What is Co-Culture?
Smaller groups that live alongside main culture but are different
What is Co-Culture communication?
Someone from a smaller group talks with someone from dominate culture
What is Intersections of our identity?
Our identity and how we interact with others are always connected to the cultures and situations we are apart of
What is intersectionality?
Looks at how different parts of our identity overlap/affect our experiences
What is predjudice?
Stereotypes towards groups conflicted with negative emotions and behavior inclinations
What is microaggression?
prejudice that is expressed directly towards people who are members of unrepresented groups
How to overcome predjudice?
Use empathy,learn,engage, and listen
What is a high-uncertainty-avoidance culture?
Value control and structure
What is a low-uncertainty avoidance culture?
Values innovation, change, and critical thinking
What are emotional display rules?
Norms that dictate the way people show emotion
What is power distance?
How people in culture feel about power being shared unequally
What is a lower-power-distance?
Leaders try to be more equal with others and minimize the gap between them and those of less power
What is a higher-power-distance
People in high positions are treated with more respect and the gap between leaders and others is accepted
What is communication accommodation?
Adjusting how you communicate to math the preferences of the person you’re speaking to makes you seem more skilled and understanding when you can adapt
