EXAM 3 (Landslides/mass movement) Flashcards
(12 cards)
Define mass movements:
the downslope motion of rock, regolith, snow and ice
Define soil creep:
the slow downhill movement of regolith due to seasonal expansion and contraction of regolith
Define solifluction:
The slow downhill movement of tundra.
Define slumping:
mass movements by sliding of regolith as coherent blocks
Define mudflows:
Mudflows are a slurry water and fine sediment
Define lahars:
Special volcanic mud or debris flow
Define debris flows:
A mudflow with many larger rocks
Define rock slides:
Sudden movement downslope - only containing rock
Why do mass movements occur?
due to gravity, the primary force pulling materials downhill
How do water and vegetation affect hillslopes?
Water reduces slope strength by adding weight; removing vegetation slows removal of water and destroys root stapling
What can trigger mass movement?
Shocks, vibrations, liquefaction, changes in slope loads, steepness, support, slope strength
6 techniques that prevent mass movement:
Revegetation, regarding, drainage, reducing undercutting, engineering structures
