- medical emergency with high mortality
- uncommon due to earlier diagnosis capability

- precipitating acute event: infection, MI, cold exposure, surgery
- administration of sedative drugs

- decreased mental status: coma
- hypothermia
- hypotension

- hypoglycemia
- hypoventilation

- thyroid hormone
- glucocorticoids
- supportive measures
