- medical emergency with high mortality
- uncommon due to earlier diagnosis capability

- hypothyroidism
- long standing and severe form
- precipitating acute event: infection, MI, cold exposure, surgery
- administration of sedative drugs

- decreased mental status: coma
- hypothermia
- hypotension
- bradycardia
- hyponatremia
- hypoglycemia
- hypoventilation

- thyroid hormone
- glucocorticoids
- supportive measures

- levothyroxine
- liothyronine
- IV, slow bolus then daily doses

- ICU
- IV fluids
- electrolyte replacement

- correction of hypothermia
