4 Purposes of Prison
Retribution, Rehabilitation, Deterrence, Incapacitation
Retribution
Focuses on past offenses rather than the offender. The idea that people committing the same crime should receive equal punishments and sentences that balance out for the crime committed
Rehabilitation
The idea that the purpose of punishment is to apply treatment and resources to the offender to avoid rearrest.
Deterrence
The theory that criminal penalties do not just punish violators, but discourage others from committing similar if not the same offenses. The death penalty was used a deterent, kind of like a scare tactic.
Incapacitation
The act of making an individual “incapable” of committing crime
