Exam 4 Flashcards
(15 cards)
Ecology
The study between the interrelationships of organisms and the physical environment
Environmentalism
Using ecological knowledge, ethics, and economics to inform personal decisions and public policy-related responsibilities of the natural world
Population
Group of individuals of the same species in a given area that can interbreed and interact
Community
An assembly of interacting species living together at the same place and time
Ecosystem
A community of organisms in which their physical environment is taken into account. Biotic and abiotic factors.
Landscape
Geographic areas that include multiple ecosystems. The presentation and all the visible aspects and topography
Biosphere
Planet earth. All of the living organisms on Earth and their respective environments.
Weather
The short term state of atmospheric conditions at a place and time.
Climate
The long term average atmospheric conditions.
Air circulation
Ocean Circulation
Gulf Stream
Biogeography
The study of the distribution of species
Patterns of biogeography are interconnected in the spatial and temporal scales hierarchy.
Global scale –> regional scale –> landscape scale –> local scale
biome
Grouping of organisms in climatically related habitats. The same biome can be found in widely separated places. Anywhere you can get the same radiation, precipitation, and topographic conditions.
“Use Inspired” Approach
Takes into account the benefits humans can receive from conserving natural areas
