What is ozone?
Ozone is three oxygen atoms bonded together.
What is the troposphere?
The troposphere is the lowest zone of the atmosphere that extends from the Earth’s surface to a height of approximately 8-15 kilometers.
What is the stratosphere?
The stratosphere is the zone of the atmosphere above the troposphere where the ozone layer is located.
What is the ozone layer?
The ozone layer is a layer of the atmosphere rich in ozone (O3) molecules, which absorb much of the incoming ultraviolet radiation.
What happens in the mesosphere?
Meteors and meteorites start burning up in the mesosphere because this layer possesses enough gas to cause friction with entering rocks.
What is the thermosphere?
The thermosphere is the outermost layer of the atmosphere where gas molecules are so spread out that they can barely bump into each other.
What are greenhouse gases (GHG)?
Greenhouse gases are gases in the atmosphere that trap heat.
How does the greenhouse effect occur?
The greenhouse effect occurs when radiation and heat are trapped in the atmosphere.
What are the major components of the atmosphere?
The major components of the atmosphere are nitrogen (N2, 78%), oxygen (O2, 21%), argon (Ar, 0.93%), and carbon dioxide (CO2, 0.036%).
What is transpiration?
Transpiration is a special type of evaporation that takes place in plants when leaves open their stomata to collect CO2 for photosynthesis, causing water to evaporate.
What is evaporation?
Evaporation is the process when liquid turns into gas.
What is precipitation?
Precipitation is when water falls as rain, snow, or hail.
What is humidity?
Humidity is the percentage of water vapor in the air.
What is condensation?
Condensation is the process when gas turns into liquid.
What is interception?
Interception is the catching of rainfall by vegetation.
What is infiltration?
Infiltration is the process where water enters the soil.
What is surface runoff?
Surface runoff is the movement of water across uneven surfaces due to gravity.
What is groundwater flow?
Groundwater flow is water that has traveled vertically down and is moving between aquifers.
