Vroom’s Expectancy Theory
People are motivated to behave in ways that produce outcomes they value M=E x I x V
Expectancy
Belief that the goal can be achieved (I CAN build a bridge to the moon)
Instrumentality
Perception of the strength of the connection between ones performance and its outcome or result (If I build a bridge to the moon then I’ll have the moon all to myself)
Valence
The positive or negative value placed on outcomes or rewards (I don’t like being alone/I crave isolation)
Managerial expectations of Expectancy Theory
Some workers value interesting wok and recognition more than money;
Extrinsic rewards can lose their motivating properties over time and may undermine intrinsic motivation

Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results oriented, Time-bound
