Exam II Diagrams Flashcards

1
Q

heat engine

A

every heat engine has:
* a reservoir of heat at a high temperature.
* a sink at lower temperature.
* only some heat can be transformed into work.

working of a heat engine:
1.heat gathers from the reservoir at high temperature.
2.some of this heat is converted into mechanical work.
3.the rest of the heat expels to the sink at lower temperature.

Q

pascals principle

A

states that a change in pressure at any point in an enclosed fluid at rest is transmitted to all points in the fluid
* applies to all fluids—gases and liquids

Q

boyle’s law

A

the pressure and volume of a gas enclosed in a space are inversely proportional.
* if you increase pressure, the volume will decrease by the same factor.
* if pressure is doubled, volume will halve.
(i) the product of pressure and volume of a given mass of mass will remain the same
Pv = pV

Q

bernoulli’s principle

A

streamlines:
* thin lines represent fluid motion
* closer the lines are to each other = greater flow speed, less pressure within the fluid
* wider the lines are from each other = less flow speed, greater pressure within the fluid

Q

barometer

A

The principle of the barometer:
* mercury column exerts pressure on the mercury in the dish.
* atmosphere exerts pressure on the mercury in the dish.
* these two pressures must be equal so that the atmospheric pressure supports the mercury column.
