Differentiate between declarative and procedural knowledge, providing an example of each
Declarative Knowledge
Knowledge represented as a set of statements. (e.g. Lisbon is the capital of Portugal)
- Easier to understand and modify
- Flexibility & economy of representation
- Easier to access & communicate
Procedural Knowledge
Knowledge represented as a set of procedures. (e.g. How to ride a bicycle)
- Procedural modelling
- Meta-knowledge
- Computational efficiency
Compare and contrast tacit and explicit knowledge
Tacit Knowledge
Inconvenient and difficult to formalize and communicate. Not articulated. PErson’s mental models, intuitions, experiences, know-how and perspectives (e.g. doing the schedule of a big school).
Explicit knowledge
Conveyed in formal, systematic representations that are readily communicated. Articulated as artifacts, such as reports, books, speech, or codified in a database, software library, set of rules that can be used by a computer.
