Excretory System Flashcards
(32 cards)
What are metabolic wastes?
Substances produced by metabolism that can be toxic
What is the process of getting rid of metabolic waste called?
Excretion
What happens to cells if the fluid surrounding them becomes too watery?
Cells bloat (swell and potentially burst)
What happens to cells if the fluid surrounding them becomes too salty?
Cells dehydrate (shrink/shrivel up)
What happens to cells if urea or other waste products are not removed?
Cells die of poisoning
What is the main excretory organ?
The Kidney
How does perspiration develop an odor?
Bacteria decompose urea in perspiration, producing odorous compounds
Which organ breaks down harmful and foreign substances?
The Liver
Describe the path urine takes from formation to excretion.
Kidneys → Ureters → Urinary Bladder → Urethra
In what structure does filtration take place?
Through the capillaries of glomerulus within Bowman’s Capsule
Does passive transport require energy?
No, diffusion requires no input of energy
What is the movement of water through a semipermeable membrane called?
Osmosis
What is a nephron?
A system of tubes that acts as a filter of blood and reabsorbs materials
What provides the blood supply to the kidneys?
Renal artery
How much higher is blood pressure in the glomerulus compared to other body capillaries?
Three times as high
What is forced back into the bloodstream during active transport in the proximal convoluted tubule?
Glucose, amino acids, and some salts
What are the cells of the proximal convoluted tubule filled with?
Mitochondria
Where can water diffuse out of the loop of Henle?
In the descending limb
Where can water not diffuse out of the loop of Henle?
In the ascending limb
What regulates the amount of water in urine?
Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
What happens when the concentration of substances in the blood falls below normal?
Antidiuretic hormone is released to help reabsorb substances
What waste products are excreted in the sweat glands?
Urea, salts, and water
In what sequence do wastes pass through the kidney structures?
Bowman’s Capsule → Loop of Henle → Collecting Duct
Where are the kidneys located in the body?
On either side of the spine in the lower back
